Peter Lohse, lecturer in guitar method at the Musikhochschule Lübeck, says
“The Ten Etudes for guitar" is part
of a bachelor thesis that Martin Schley completed in the summer of 2019
at the Musikhochschule Lübeck. In my opinion, it is important that they
are being published in this edition.
The technical issues tackled in the
studies include arpeggios (No. I and IX); repetitions (No. II, V and
VII); barrée (No. III); natural and artificial harmonics (No. IV);
articulation (No. V); slurs (No. VI); connection of chords (No. VIII);
and polyphonic textures in a Fugue (No. X). As far as the sound and
harmonic structures are concerned, we are in late-romantic territory,
but never sentimental or clichéd. Those who are reminded, by No.1, of
Villa-Lobos´ first Etude, or by No.5 of Britten’s Nocturnal, should
certainly take a closer look at these pieces: you will discover in them
new and unique soundscapes.
