French pianist and piano teacher Charles-Louis Hanon (1820-1900) wrote one of the most popular technical
methods piano study, the Virtuoso Pianist. His concept of transposing the same formula up and down the piano
was revolutionary in piano technique and proved to be extremely successful for generations of pianists. Hanon’s
exercises develop agility, independence, strength, and skilled evenness in piano performance.
The following book is modeled after Hanon’s exercises added innovations designed to better serve in 21st
century piano practice. The first concept in Hanon’s books is diatonic transposition, avoiding the black keys,
which can be a weakness for any pianist. In Hanon Chords for Jazz and Popular Music every formula is
chromatically transposed in 12 keys, equalizing the use of black and white keys. The next beneficial aspect of
this book is that it is written and designed for contemporary musical practice. Today chords and chord symbols
are as much a part of a pianist’s everyday life as is notated music, and reading chord symbols is essential.
However practicing chords is strenuous and many students find it difficult to conquer the world of chords in the
practice room. Hanon Chords for Jazz and Popular Music is an accessible system that introduces chords and
chord symbols to pianists who can read music.
The book gives the pianist 135 exercises in Major, Minor, Diminished, Augmented, 7 (Dominant), Sus 4, Minor
7, Major 6, and Half Diminished chords. Pianists can also use this as a beneficial warm up exercise. Played at
medium tempo, in approximately an hour and a half, pianists can gain fluidity and flexibility in playing chords.
